Eliza Kinney is a freelance percussionist and educator known for her musical sensitivity and enthusiastic approach to teaching. Born in Bakersfield, CA, she commuted to Los Angeles for percussion lessons before completing a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance at the University of Michigan. Her interest in orchestral percussion led her to specialize at the New England Conservatory and Boston University, where she received an MM and Performance Diploma in Percussion Performance, respectively. While in Boston, she served as acting principal timpanist with the Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra. Her principal teachers have included Michael Udow, Tim Genis, Dan Bauch, Frank Epstein, and Raynor Carroll, among others.
Eliza's gift for music has led her to performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Golden State Pops Orchestra, the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra, the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, the American Youth Symphony, and the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra. She is also an avid chamber musician, and attended the Bowdoin International Music Festival in 2013. Eliza attended the Aspen Music Festival and School in 2009 and enjoyed working with faculty from the San Francisco, Dallas, and St. Louis Symphonies.
Eliza enjoys bringing her passion for orchestral music to the students of LAYO, and hopes she might energize them to explore the riches of this genre.
