Vienna Prague Tour FAQs

All students in both the Ruth Borun Concert Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra are eligible to participate in the tour.
Students must be enrolled for the Spring 2024 semester.

To register, we require a $100 non-refundable deposit and registration form, which will be available on the LAYO website beginning August 1. Please note: REGISTRATION IS FOR STUDENTS ONLY. Chaperones will register at a later time.

All payments must be made directly to LAYO via check or online via Paypal on the LAYO website. Checks should be made out ‘Los Angeles Youth Orchestra’ and mailed to:

Absolutely. However, LAYO must make regular payments to the tour company, so if you do not plan to pay the entire amount up front, we must ask that you keep current with the payment schedule. 

  • Round-trip airfare from LAX to Vienna and Prague to LAX
    Baggage fees
  • All hotel accommodations (double occupancy)
  • All ground transportation for the duration of the tour
  • All rental costs for rehearsal and performance venues
  • All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner)
  • Ticket to classical music concert
  • Entrance to museums, palaces, castles, and other tours
  • Rental of percussion, cello, bass and brass instruments

All students will need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the return date of the tour on June 26, 2024. If your student does not have a passport or it is expiring soon, I would encourage you to apply/ renew now.

Non US Passport holders will be responsible for obtaining any necessary travel visas.

The initial registration deposit of $100 is non-refundable. Cancellation deadlines and amounts are as follows:

February 1, 2024:      25% penalty of total tour cost
March 15, 2024:         50% penalty of total tour cost
May 5, 2024:                No refund

Yes. Additional rehearsals for the Vienna/ Prague tour are scheduled on May 19, June 2 and June 9 as well as a rehearsal/ concert in LA on June 16.

Students must attend at least 2 of the 3 pre-tour rehearsals as well as participate in the rehearsal / concert on June 16.

NO. All students signed up for the tour must participate in the Spring 2024 semester as we will be learning repertoire for the tour during that semester.

LAYO does not have an assistance or scholarship fund for the tour. However, previous tour participants have been extremely creative in raising money through hosting student chamber music concerts, garage sales and even busking on the Santa Monica Promenade! There are also online fundraising resources such as Go Fund Me, etc. If you have a great idea for a fundraiser, please let us know!

All rooms are doubles, two students per room. We will request rooming requests in the Spring semester, and rooming assignments will be created by LAYO and provided to the tour company.

Fantastic! We will need several parent chaperones, and we will be holding informational meetings for potential chaperones once the Fall semester has commenced. All parent chaperones must be available to fly with the group round trip from LA to Vienna and back to LA.

NO. Only registered tour participants (students, chaperones, and LAYO staff and coaches) will be permitted to ride on the buses and participate in the planned tour activities, meals, etc.

We have a final rehearsal/ preview concert in LA on Sunday, June 16 prior to departure for the tour, so all Land Only students/ parents will need to make their departing travel arrangements to Vienna on Monday or Tuesday after the concert. We will provide details and times for you to pick up your student at the end of the tour before the group departs Prague.

Yes, based on availability.  We will notify all parents as soon as the hotel and airline information is available.  It will be up to you to book your flight and hotel accordingly if you are not chaperoning.

The students must remain with the group for the entire trip, for both logistical and liability reasons. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the concerts.

Yes, with the exception of percussion instruments and other large instruments including cellos, basses and tubas. Larger instruments will be rented by the tour company and available to students upon arrival at the hotel or rehearsal venue.

The chaperone assigned to your child will have detailed information, provided by you, and will take care of your child accordingly. The tour company will be informed of all special dietary needs.

Yes, kosher meals can be provided with advance notice for an additional cost.
