LAYO Receives 500K Gift from the
Anna and Harry Borun Foundation for renamed
Ruth Borun Concert Orchestra.

The Los Angeles Youth Orchestra has received a $500,000 gift from the Anna and Harry Borun Foundation. The gift, the largest received in the institution’s history, will be used to rename LAYO’s Concert Orchestra, the intermediate level ensemble, as the Ruth Borun Concert Orchestra.

The renaming of the orchestra is to honor the memory of Ruth, a significant patron, friend, and believer in the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra since its inception. Ruth and her husband, Dr. Raymond Borun, became the first principal donors of LAYO shortly after the orchestra began in 2000. While attending both rehearsals and concerts, Ruth was delighted to witness young people learning about civic responsibility, self discipline, and civility. Ruth became very enthusiastic about LAYO, developing a deep friendship and working closely with LAYO Artistic Director and Founder, Russell Steinberg.

“Ruth is the unsung hero of Los Angeles Youth Orchestra, and I will always be deeply appreciative of her invaluable advice, emotional support and unwavering friendship,” said Steinberg. “It was Ruth who taught me that our orchestra has a higher purpose than instilling a passion for classical music – that providing access to an affordable, quality music program is the perfect antidote to the coarsening of society. This became the DNA of LAYO, crystallized into our slogan ‘the future of culture.’”
